Who are Extraveganza?
Our story is a tale of love, awkwardness and optimism!
It starts in 2011 when The Extra met The Vegan.
After some time, The Extra built up the courage to ask: "Would you like to go to dinner with me?" and The Vegan happily agreed...but they soon found themselves descending into a lengthy logistical debate that ended up with them trudging through London on the hunt for somewhere romantic and special, only to end up squatting outside a falafel spot, the Vegan in her Little Black Dress and shiny heels.
Luckily, The Extra and The Vegan quite liked each other by then and so decided to put down a record of all their trials and errors (and believe us, there were lots of false starts, following so-called expert guides to the depths of suburbia in search of the holy grail of a good, clean restaurant serving food free from animal products!).
Their aim is to make it easier to live a life where people don't have to compromise on their dietary beliefs because they are desperate or hungry or foolish enough to hang out with (and love, hopes the Extra) someone who is not vegan, or at least not yet.
And so Extraveganza.com was born. A resource, based on hard-won experience, for any vegan wanting to go out, hang out and chill out with the 99.76% of the UK population that is not vegan, without feeling awkward, or marginalised.
Extra and Vegan are constantly changing and adapting to their environments. Vegan is not only dairy and meat-free, but also sometimes wheat free and Extra is aiming to be meat-free, and all of this, with the aim of everything being stress-free.
Extra realised that the change in his diet helped his allergies, and that this would probably be true for other allergy sufferers. A little research showed the Extra and Vegan that the UK is one of the top 3 countries for allergy incidence, that at least 6% of children have a proven food allergy, and the incidence of asthma and eczema has trebled in the UK since the 1980s. And so the Vegan wasn't really just 1 in 400, but more like 1 in 10 with allergy sufferers.
So enough of getting 'hangry' (hungry+angry), enough of the piteous look when you decline the steak restaurant because you're vegan, or avoid cheese because it causes an allergic reaction and enough of the judgement that comes when you'd rather pay a little extra for cosmetics that are APF (Animal Product Free).
The UK is catching up with Los Angeles, New York, Rome, and Berlin in providing some sparkly exciting options for people like us - and every month we pick three products we love, and every week we publish something that is on our minds...feel free to have a look, have a read, have a chat, have a whisper, have a go!
